Sarah Norden (ella/ella) es una artista e investigadora de circo emergente radicada en Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Criada en Maine, EE. UU., actualmente está completando su último año en la Escuela Nacional de Circo, donde se especializa en aro aéreo. También trabaja como investigadora independiente en el Centro de Investigación, Innovación y Transferencia de las Artes Circenses (CRITAC). Sarah tiene una licenciatura en Estudios de Ciencia y Tecnología de Wesleyan University, donde estudió la intersección del arte, la ciencia, la ética y el medio ambiente. Sus intereses incluyen: el malestar, el papel del yo en el desempeño y la materialidad del cuerpo.
Sarah Norden (she/her) is an emerging circus artist and researcher based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Raised in Maine, USA, she is currently completing her final year at the National Circus School, where she specializes in aerial hoop. She also works as an independent researcher with the Center for Research, Innovation, and Transfer of Circus Arts (CRITAC). Sarah holds a BA in Science and Technology Studies from Wesleyan University, where she studied the intersection of art, science, ethics, and the environment. Her interests include: discomfort, the role of self in performance, and the materiality of the body.
Abstract/Resumen
Buscando un escape: un estudio autoetnográfico de la innovación estética en la escuela de circo profesional
En la educación circense profesional, la innovación se anuncia como una fuerza disruptiva y liberadora. Sin embargo, esta versión optimista no tiene en cuenta la función ideológica de la innovación en el posfordismo y, al hacerlo, oscurece las formas ambivalentes en que los estudiantes experimentan el llamado a innovar. En este estudio, destaco los deseos, expectativas y limitaciones que dan forma a mi experiencia de innovación como estudiante en la École Nationale de Cirque para buscar una forma de generar cambios en el circo que vaya más allá de la superación personal hacia el bienestar de la comunidad.
Searching for an Escape: An Autoethnographic Study of Aesthetic Innovation in Professional Circus School
In professional circus education, innovation is advertised as being a disruptive, liberating force. This optimistic story, however, fails to consider innovation’s ideological function in post-Fordism, and in so doing, obscures the ambivalent ways students experience the call to innovate. In this study, I peel away the desires, expectations, and limitations that shape my experience of innovation as a student at École Nationale de Cirque to hunt for a way of making change in circus that looks beyond self-enhancement towards the wellbeing of the community.
