Biografía/Biography
Gaia Vimercati es investigadora independiente y directora de proyectos culturales de Quattrox4, un centro de circo contemporáneo en Milán. Obtuvo una maestría en Literatura Comparada en el Trinity College Dublin (2015) y creó CENSIMENTO CIRCO ITALIA, el primer mapa de compañías de circo en Italia (2016). Publicó Chaplin. Brecht. Fo. Hacia un concepto de payaso épico en CIRCO 360°. CULTURA. SIGNIFICADO. PRÁCTICA editado por Franziska Trapp (2023). Junto con el dramaturgo Federico Bellini llevó a cabo una investigación sobre la obra de Monk y Mnouchkine en los Archivos de La Biennale di Venezia. Desde 2021 es curadora de LA PAROLA AI CORPI, una residencia híbrida para 7 artistas circenses cuyo objetivo es deconstruir las relaciones binarias entre teoría y práctica en el circo. Participó en EASTAP (2020, 2022), CaIO (2021, 2024) y BIAC (2021).
Gaia Vimercati is independent researcher and cultural project manager of Quattrox4, a contemporary circus centre in Milan. She received a MA in Comparative Literature at Trinity College Dublin (2015) and created CENSIMENTO CIRCO ITALIA, the first map of circus companies in Italy (2016). She published Chaplin. Brecht. Fo. Toward a Concept of Epic Clowning in 360° CIRCUS. CULTURE. MEANING. PRACTICE edited by Franziska Trapp (2023). Together with dramaturg Federico Bellini she carried out a research about Monk and Mnouchkine’s work in the Archives of La Biennale di Venezia. Since 2021 she is the curator of LA PAROLA AI CORPI, a hybrid residency for 7 circus artists aimed at deconstructing the binary relations between theory and practice in circus. She took part in EASTAP (2020, 2022), CaIO (2021, 2024) and BIAC (2021).
Abstract/Resumen
Amistades Disidentes: La Autoría Colectiva Como Herramienta Para El Cambio Radical En El Circo
Esta contribución tiene como objetivo explorar el concepto de solidaridad en el circo a través de la noción de “amistad disidente”, definida por la académica Leela Gandhi (2005) como “todos aquellos gestos afectivos que rechazan el alineamiento”. A través de una metodología híbrida que combina estudios teóricos y trabajo de campo que experimentamos, intentaremos observar la relevancia artística y política de aquellas prácticas circenses “cuya condición y objetivo es la reconstitución de formas plurales de agencia y prácticas sociales de resistencia”.
Dissident Friendships: Collective Authoring As A Tool For Radical Change In Circus
This contribution aims at exploring the concept of solidarity in circus through the notion of “dissident friendships”, defined by scholar Leela Gandhi (2005) as “all those affective gestures that refuse alignment” . Through a hybrid methodology combining theory studies and field-work we experience we will try to look at the artistic and political relevance of those circus practices “whose condition and aim is the reconstitution of plural forms of agency and social practices of resistances”.
